Dark Pokémon are a kind of Pokémon in the Pokémon Trading Card Game which are a corrupt version of the regular Pokémon. These Dark Pokémon first appeared in the Team Rocket Expansion pack where all of the evolved Pokémon were Dark Pokémon.
This is believed to be because Team Rocket is a corrupt organization so it makes sense that all the Pokémon which are raised by them would also become corrupt.
When the fourth and final expansion in the Neo series, Neo Destiny, was released it showed us that Pokémon have different paths that they can take. The path that the Pokémon takes depends largely upon how it was trained.
Neo Destiny also let us see that darkness-type Pokémon and Dark Pokémon are not the same. Dark Charizard is still a fire-type Pokémon.
The appearance of a Dark Pokémon card varies from that of a normal Pokémon card. The Dark Pokémon cards will have a dark brown or black character window, Pokédex box, and evolution box.
Dark Pokémon usually have lower Hit Points (HP) and higher attack damage than their normal counterparts.
But are these Dark Pokémon cards worth anything?
Dark Pokémon cards can be valuable but how much they are worth comes down to their rarity and condition. A rare Dark Pokémon that is in good condition will be worth far more than one that is not rare or in poor condition.
If your Dark Pokémon card is worth anything it will be because of the number of cards that were printed at the time of release (how rare it is).
If there were millions of a specific card made then it won’t be rare which means it also won’t be valuable. As with other collectibles, Dark Pokémon cards are worth more the more rare that they are.
How Do You Know If A Dark Pokemon Card Is Valuable?
To know if a specific Pokémon card that you have is valuable you will need to look that card up on a place like eBay and see what it recently sold for.
Pokémon cards can be fairly easy to value once you know what other cards recently sold for. If you have a specific Dark Pokémon card that is in mint condition and that same card in poor condition sold for $200 then you know yours will be worth considerably more than that.
You can also look at the rarity of cards to get a better idea how much it might be worth.
The first thing to look for on your card when valuing it is the rarity level. This can typically be found in the bottom right-hand corner of the card.
If you see a little black circle then you have a common card. If there is a small black diamond then it is an uncommon card. A little black star means that the card is rare. If there is a star H or three stars then it is a special, extra rare card.
You’ll want to be careful with the rare and extra rare cards as they are the ones with the most potential to be worth money. Any first edition card is probably going to be worth money. These cards will say “Wizards of the Coast” on them.
The “Wizards of the Coast” cards were printed in late 1999 or early 2000. If your card has a little 1 inside of a circle with lines radiating out of it then it is a first edition card and could possibly be worth a lot of money.
You will also need to check the collector number on your card. The collector number is typically in the bottom right-hand corner of the card, below the rarity of the card.
You will want to pay close attention to any cards that have a collector number that is higher than the number of cards printed in that set. For example, if a card has a number of 131/127 you will want to keep that card set aside to look up recent prices on eBay.
Why Is Dark Charizard Worth So Much?
A Dark Charizard card is a holo rare card. A holo rare card is a rare card that has a holographic or shiny picture. Only a small percentage of rare cards get a holographic variant.
That makes these cards collector items. The Dark Charizard card has recently been sold for $750.
What Pokémon Cards Are Worth A Lot Of Money?
Pokémon has grown in popularity ever since it was released in the late 90s. There are several cards that can be worth a large chunk of change now.
Many of the cards that are worth a lot are first edition holographic cards.
A first edition holographic Charizard has an estimated value of $24,000. This first edition Pokémon card is probably the most valuable.

First edition holographic Blastoise has an estimated value of $5,500.
Blastoise was also introduced in the Pokémon Red and Blue video games and was even the cover art for Pokémon Blue. He is the final evolution of Squirtle.
Blastoise has twin water cannons on the shell on his back which delivers powerful blasts of water with incredible accuracy.
A first edition holographic Chansey can bring in $3,500. This first edition card is of a normal type Pokémon who is very difficult to catch. This Pokémon’s special move called “soft-boiled” helps to heal other Pokémon and people.
The first edition holographic Hitmonchan has an estimated value of $3,250 for a mint condition card. Hitmonchan is a fighting type Pokémon which is fairly easy to see with his boxing gloves and shoulder pads.
He’s a quick Pokémon with moves such as “jab” and “special punch.”
A first edition holographic Ninetales in mint condition can bring in $3,000. Grabbing one of Ninetales golden-white tails is said to bring a thousand-year curse to the person who touches it.
This Pokémon was inspired by a creature called kitsune from Japanese folklore. It has moves such as “fire blast” which causes 80 damage to it’s opponents.
The first edition holographic Alakazam in mint condition can go for as much as $2,800. Alakazam is the final evolution of Abra. His signature move “kinesis” reduces the accuracy of his opponent’s attacks.
Final Thoughts
Dark Pokémon cards can be worth money but it really comes down to how rare the card is and what condition it is in. You can have the rarest card in the world but if it is in multiple pieces and was chewed on by a dog it won’t be worth much.
