Trampolines are a great way to burn energy and have hours of fun in the summer. You and your friends may have spent many a summer day outside jumping or just sitting and talking on the trampoline.

After purchasing a trampoline for your family to create new memories, it is important to keep up with maintenance. You need to protect the trampoline from rusting, bending, ripping, etc.

What about the weather? Can you protect your trampoline from the rain? Are trampolines waterproof?

Trampolines are designed to be outside and withstand all kinds of weather. The trampoline mat is in fact waterproof as they are made with water-resistant material.

The materials in the mat are also used to protect the trampoline frame as well. Make sure your trampoline mat is securely in place as if it is in its proper place, the mat serves as a protective barrier between the frame and outdoor elements as well.

The frame is designed to be rust-resistant. However, this does not mean that your trampoline will never rust. Your trampoline will just take a bit longer than other types of metal that are outdoors longer to rust.

The springs and metal do normally come with a cover, but it is important to check and ensure the safety of the metal underneath. Make sure the mat is always secure and covering the springs, this allows everyone to jump safely.

How Long Will A Trampoline Last Outside?

You have decided that a trampoline is a perfect addition to your backyard. You have put plenty of time, money, and energy into getting the trampoline.

Of course you will want to make sure that your trampoline will last a long time. But how long will it last?

The overall longevity of your trampoline will be anywhere from three to eight years. The total lifespan of a trampoline depends on the care and maintenance done throughout the years.

Another factor in longevity is how often the trampoline is used. If your family uses the trampoline every day, it won’t last as long as trampolines that are used every once in a while.

There are also a few additional things to look for when purchasing a new trampoline that can affect the longevity.

These are a few factors to consider when thinking about just how long your trampoline will last.

The Frame

When it comes to the frame of your trampoline, you need something that is durable. The frame provides a solid base that shouldn’t bend or shift during long days of jumping.

The frame is the toughest part of the trampoline. It is designed to withstand whatever weather is thrown its way.

The frame is the longest-lasting part of the trampoline. It can last ten-plus years with proper care and maintenance.

The Mat

The jumping mat gets a bit more action than the frame. The mat is designed with different materials to be either waterproof or water-resistant. The constant jumping up and down on the mat can take a toll and wear it down quickly.

The mat will typically last anywhere from two to five years before needing to be replaced. The longevity depends on the proper care of the mat and also how often the mat is used.

The Springs

The springs are what allow the mat to last as long as it does. The force of the jumping is spread evenly throughout the springs. The springs are often made of galvanized steel and are rust-resistant. Even though the frame and springs are made of the same material, the springs wear out much faster.

The springs are constantly being stretched with each and every bounce. They will slowly begin to lose their elasticity and will eventually need to be replaced.

There is no exact time frame to know just how long springs will last. Be sure to check them every few months to ensure they are sturdy. Unfortunately, springs are the part of the trampoline that needs replacing the most.

The good news is that they are the cheapest part of the trampoline to be replaced.

Why Do Trampolines Rip?

When a trampoline mat rips there are a few things that happen. You will typically try to ignore the tiny rip and hope it goes away. You could also avoid jumping near the rip and place tape on it to remember where not to jump.

However, rips that aren’t addressed immediately tend to get bigger and bigger. Rips are unsafe and need to be dealt with immediately.

The safest way to truly fix a ripped trampoline mat is to get it replaced. So why exactly do trampolines rip in the first place?

Trampoline mats rip because of weather, sharp objects, too much weight, or a variety of other circumstances. Sometimes the mat will rip simply from age.

There are several factors to consider when your trampoline rips.

Weather

If there was a storm, branches may have fallen and ended up puncturing your trampoline mat. The sun also plays a huge role in the strength of your mat.

If your trampoline is constantly in direct sunlight, the UV rays will end up weakening your mat much faster.

Be sure to place your trampoline somewhere away from falling debris and out of the sun if possible.

Shoes

It is best to jump on a trampoline in socks. Jumping in your shoes can bring sand, dirt, and rocks onto the mat. These tiny particles can end up doing great damage to your mat.

The rubber soles on the shoes also wear down the integrity of the mat making it easier to develop rips and tears. Always remove shoes before jumping.

People

Trampoline manufacturers recommend only one jumper at a time for safety. We all know that jumping just one person at a time isn’t as fun. Always be sure to watch out for other jumpers to avoid colliding.

Also, be aware of how many jumpers are on the trampoline as well. The weight of too many at one time can wear down the springs and mat much faster than needed.

Be careful of loose or “sharp” clothing as well. A back pocket button being scooted across the mat can cause potential tears to happen.

Springs

If you notice that your trampoline doesn’t have as much bounce as it used to, it might be due to the springs. The springs can stretch, rust, and wear out over time. If a spring becomes stretched too far, it could create tears in your trampoline mat as well.

Final Thoughts

Even though trampolines may be waterproof, they do still need lots of care and attention. The best way to ensure your trampoline will last as long as possible is to get a trampoline cover.

This will help to protect your springs, frame, and mat from all elements of the weather.
