Trampolines were invented around 1934 by Larry Griswold and George Nissen at the University of Iowa. They had originally designed it to train astronauts and tumblers. It did not take long before people started to jump on them just for fun.

It wasn’t until 1959 that outdoor trampoline parks came into the picture. When a large number of injuries occurred people quickly lost interest in these parks. Only recently did they start to become popular again.

Indoor trampoline parks have wall to wall trampolines so as to keep their customers from falling or flipping off of one. If you can’t make it to a trampoline park or simply want the convenience of having a trampoline in your own back yard then you are probably wondering how much one weighs.

Smaller trampolines can weigh as little as sixty pounds. Larger trampolines, like the ones you see in backyards often weigh at least two hundred pounds. The weight of a trampoline depends on the exact size and the material that it is made from.

A fifteen-foot round alloy steel trampoline with a carbon fiber surrounded net weighs two hundred and five pounds and can hold up to four hundred pounds of weight.

If the trampoline you have is larger than 15 feet or a rectangle instead of round then it will be heavier than 200lbs. If it’s smaller than 15 feet then it will be lighter than that.

How Heavy Is Too Heavy For A Trampoline?

Now that you have decided to get a trampoline you will want to know how much weight it can hold.

I remember when I was in middle school and high school my cousins and I would spend hours jumping on the trampoline together. When we got tired out from it, we would all just sprawl out on top of it and watch the stars.

Sometimes we even camped out on that trampoline all night.

Before you (or your family) get on a trampoline you will want to know how much weight your new trampoline can support.

The weight limit of a trampoline is determined by the size and design of each individual trampoline. You will want to check the box that your trampoline comes in for the exact weight limit for that particular one.

There are two different weight limits for trampolines. Structural weight limit and user weight limit. The structural weight limit is how much the trampoline can hold altogether. The individual weight limit is the amount of weight an individual person jumping on the trampoline can weigh.

If you are just searching for an estimate of how much your trampoline can hold then here are some basic numbers.

Typically, a toddler or kid trampoline will hold a weight of fifty to a hundred and fifty pounds and will be about ten feet. Twelve-foot trampolines that are designed for older kids such as teenagers tend to have a weight limit of two hundred and fifty to three hundred pounds. Fifteen and sixteen-foot trampolines can usually hold up to four hundred and fifty pounds.

You will want to make sure that you check for the weight limit on the specific type of trampoline that you are purchasing because the kind of material that the trampoline is made out of will have an impact on how much weight it can support.

How Long Does A Trampoline Last?

Purchasing a trampoline is a big investment. They are quite costly so you probably want to know how long one will last before you decide to make the purchase.

The average lifespan of a trampoline is three to eight years; however, this really depends on several factors such as how you take care of it, the trampoline frame, the springs, and the mat.

The frame of the trampoline is made of a strong metal which is designed to support the weight of the people who will be jumping on it. This metal frame is held together by screws, bolts, and washers.

The frame of your trampoline can withstand inclement weather as it is designed to be used outside. If your frame is put together correctly and tightly then it should last you a long time.

Over time the frame of your trampoline might begin to fall apart or break. This can happen from people standing or jumping off of the frame.

The frame of the trampoline is the most expensive part of it, so if you can take good care of it and keep it from being bent out of shape then the other parts of the trampoline are easy and more affordable to replace as needed.

The mat of the trampoline is probably the part that will need to be replaced first in most cases. This is the part that everyone is jumping on. It can be damaged from too much sun, too much rain, and too much snow.

You can put away your trampoline during the winter or during the rainy season or you can purchase a trampoline cover to help the mat last longer. A trampoline cover will help protect your mat from the rain and snow without you having to take your trampoline apart to put it away for the season.

Another way to protect your trampoline mat is to make sure that you do not wear shoes on it. You should also make sure to keep any sharp objects off of your person while jumping.

If you notice a hole in your trampoline mat you can patch it. It is best to patch any small holes as soon as you see them so they do not get any bigger.

If the little rings that the springs attach to on the mat pop off it might be best to purchase a new mat.

The springs of your trampoline also need protection from the weather. They do sell spring covers that you can put on them to protect them from moisture.

Alternatively, you can make your own spring covers with some pool noodles. You will want to make sure that your springs are covered and protected in some way to keep them from rusting out.

Once you have invested in a new trampoline you will want to make sure that you are giving it the proper maintenance that it requires so that it will last for years of bouncing fun.

You will want to frequently check the screws on your trampoline frame. If any have loosened you will want to tighten them right away. This will ensure that the frame is tightly put together and that the weight on the trampoline can be distributed as it should.

You will need to check the springs of the trampoline frequently as well even if they have spring covers on them. If any of the springs appear to have the beginnings of any rust you will want to apply a thin layer of WD-40.

When you check your springs make sure that they are expanding and then bouncing back to their original position. Even if you are vigilant in the care of your trampoline you will eventually have to replace the springs but the better maintenance that you provide, the longer they can last.

A cover for your trampoline mat will help it to last longer. Make sure that when the trampoline is not in use to place the cover on it.

Lastly, you will want to anchor your trampoline down. This will keep it from blowing away or flipping over in a strong storm. Anchoring your trampoline will also help the legs of your frame to last longer because they will be firmly rooted to the ground so they won’t be bouncing every time someone jumps on it.

A trampoline can bring a lot of fun to your backyard get togethers but it can be a pretty big investment. You should make sure to do a little research to find out which one is best for your family.
