Most of us can look back fondly to memories on the trampoline out behind our childhood home. A fun-filled day with friends was always a score when you had a trampoline out back.

Enjoying the outdoors and exercising in a fun way are also great opportunities that trampolines provide for kids to get out and get active.
Trampolines can be used by any age but are best for kids who are 6-16 years old. Children younger or older than that won’t enjoy the trampoline as much as that age range.
Even though trampolines are fun for many ages, they can be dangerous if the user does not meet the right height, weight, and age requirements. Due to a body’s development, certain ages are not physically ready for that kind of activity.
The American College of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a child reach the age of at least 6 years old to use a trampoline.
“We want children to enjoy exercise and physical activity, especially during the summer months,” says AAOS spokesperson and Los Angeles pediatric orthopaedic surgeon Jennifer M. Weiss, MD, “but parents and caregivers should know about the dangers of trampolines and the risk for serious injury, especially in very young children.
Children younger than age 6 are less likely to have the coordination, body awareness, and swift reaction time necessary to keep their bodies, bones and brains safe on trampolines.”
It’s recommended that a child undergo a medical examination by a pediatrician before beginning to use a trampoline. This medical check-up can help parents understand if there are any conditions that will become a larger issue from repeating impacts on the developing bones and joints.
When Do You Become Too Old To Use A Trampoline?
Most people tend to grow out of enjoyment with the backyard toy after a certain age, but others want to keep bouncing far into their adult years. Some groups, like Lords of Gravity, even continue to make a profession from pulling off stunts and high flying acts from their trampoline setups.

When a person or people use a trampoline that exceeds its weight limits, it can cause the spring and mat to become damaged. This damage can cause injuries to those using the trampoline as well if it was to break while they are using it.
Damage is not the only reason for weight limits though. Most trampolines are equipped with springs and mats that are tuned for a certain weight limit. This tuning allows the jumpers generate enough force to bounce up and down easily without being very heavy.
This feature allows smaller children to bounce easily whereas a spring and mat tuned for heavy weight would be much harder to generate bouncing force.
What Trampolines Are Better For Older Ages?
Now you may be wondering, what are my options if I am older and heavier than most trampolines at the store are designed for? You actually still have great options, and they will probably end up being more enjoyable than your average store bought trampoline kits.
Higher quality trampolines have higher weight limits which in turn means they are better for adults. Adults will need a larger rectangular or oval trampoline rather than the smaller round one that kids use.
From trampoline parks to high-grade backyard trampolines, there are plenty of different options for adult jumpers.
Depending on how much you want to spend, there are several different types of trampoline options when you are still not tired of jumping in your “adult” years.
One option is a trampoline park. A feature of many cities in the current times are trampoline parks. Here a person can pay a daily admission fee, usually around 15-30 dollars.
The trampoline pads in these types of places are spread out across the entire floor area and are usually professional-grade springs and mats. These places also feature game areas for dodgeball, basketball dunking, and a variety of other sky high games.
One other great aspect of a trampoline park is the options for larger parties and groups. Because of their massive size, larger parties of people can jump at the same time, making it a great option for children who want to jump with all their friends as well.
Trampoline parks can also vary from more child centered to professional gymnast grade in type, in case your extreme side wants to push a limit.
The other option for adult trampoline enthusiasts is a custom backyard trampoline. Many times, these are used by gymnasts and parkour professionals to keep their skills honed without leaving the house.
These setups allow the user to reach much greater heights and execute a variety of tricks and stunts. The higher grade springs, better mat, and larger size makes them much more of an investment, with most jumping pads ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 dollars.
These options are usually also in ground, so special care and attention is needed above what a regular trampoline needs.
So, once you reach the age of 6, there are many different ways to enjoy trampoline fun, it just depends on how you want to do it! A child can start with a beginner backyard trampoline, move to trampoline parks with friends, and if they still haven’t gotten fed up with jumping, they can even move on to their very own custom set up!
